The development of DVD Rip.

We can use winzip to compress ordinary files. As for video and audio compression, where DVD Rip plays a part, it requires a wide variety of video and audio encoder.

In video coding, MPEG4 of Microsoft is commonly known as the ancestor in this area. DivX and Xvid, which we are most familiar with as used in DVD Rip, are all developed from MPEG4. Encoders based on MPEG4 currently are Windows Media Video 9, DivX, Xvid, and so on. Especially Divx and Xvid, which are both developed based on open source code, are most perfectly and richly developed. Divx/Xvid-encoded video files not only have excellent quality of image, and also can be synthesized with various formats of audio files. They also support multiple audio tracks and subtitles, and are equipped with abundant powerful plug-ins.

An encoder very similar to Divx/Xvid is VP6. It is developed on the basis of H.264. The features of VP6 are also very close to Divx/Xvid. It performs well under low code rate. This encoded mode is adopted by EVD of our country. Another very important encoder needs mentioning is Real. It has accomplished a qualitative leap since RV9 Real and possesses the strength to combat Divx/Xvid.

In audio coding, the most common encoder is Mp3, of which Lame MP3 encoder plays a leading role in this area. In addition, Windows Media Audio 9 WMA, AAC, Real9/10 of RA, and etc are also very common audio encoders. For Xvid/Divx, as a matter of fact, the available formats could be much richer. Since DVD audio file is not large, direct use of DVD' AC3 and DTS is feasible, thereby making the audio enjoyment of DVD Rip to the limit.

The new multimedia file synthesized after respectively encoding video and audio files of DVD is the main file of DVD Rip.
